Cross-Cutting Areas

Summary Series

The summary series will be available by the end of 2014. The series highlights the project’s successes and lessons learned in four areas:

  • Continuous distribution: results from pilots
  • LLIN care and repair research
  • Targeting LLIN subsidies with e-coupons
  • Culture of net use research studies

Policy Recommendations

NetWorks plays an important role in developing and promoting appropriate policies at both the international and national levels to encourage sustained, high levels of ITN and related technologies ownership and use.  NetWorks focuses on three themes: continuous distribution, mass campaigns and net Integrity.

Research

Over 20 articles published since 2012 guide and inform implementations strategies and policy decisions to improve outcomes.

Distribution of LLINs

NetCALC

NetCALC is an Excel-based tool that models several scenarios of continuous distribution logistics and approaches based on country-specific data, and provides estimations of the ability of varied channels to achieve overall universal coverage. These channels include ANC, EPI, school-based distribution, curative care, community-level distribution, and retail. View NetCALC’s four modules, the online training and download the modelling tool.

Case Studies: Lessons in Brief – highlights from malaria endemic countries on routine distribution of LLINs

The Continuous LLIN Distribution Lessons in Brief is a series of case studies describing experiences with continuous or routine distribution of LLINs in several countries. The case studies highlight the elements that contributed to the success of each experience as well as important lessons learned. Countries: Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, South Sudan and Tanzania.

Guides on Continuous Distribution of LLINs

The RBM Vector Control Working Group’s Work Stream on Continuous Distribution has prepared a series of guides to share information on and experience with continuous distribution across several countries. Included are lessons learned and key considerations for those considering implementing school-based LLIN distributions.

  • Continuous LLIN Distribution: A Guide to Concepts and Planning
  • Country-to-Country Guide for Implementers of LLIN Keep-up
  • LLINs for Continuous and Campaign Distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Collation of Global Funding Commitments for 2011-16
  • School-based LLIN Distribution Guide

Toolkit for Continuous Distribution

This toolkit is a compilation of resources from recent experiences and research of LLIN continuous distribution systems. An array of potential mechanisms exist, including distributing nets through schools, community volunteers, or antenatal visits, and are discussed in detail in the guides and resources in this toolkit.

Toolkit for NetWorks Country Resources

The toolkit offers resources grouped by country—Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda and Madagascar. Each country developed a strategic approach for their population, optimizing existing and expanding current LLIN distribution channels and designing BCC campaigns to promote the availability and proper use of nets. Resources include research publications, process evaluations, strategy documents, training materials, BCC campaign material, and evaluation tools and questionnaires.

Videos

Two documentaries relate the adoption of continuous LLIN distribution systems in Ghana and Senegal. Country implementers describe the decisions made in selecting effective distribution channels and the scale up nationwide to sustain gains made in universal coverage.

Net Use and Care

Toolkit for Care and Repair Research and BCC Interventions

This toolkit contains resources for program planners and NMCPs related to the care and repair of mosquito nets. It includes formative research tools, protocols, and reports; materials developed for BCC campaigns around care and repair, and tools and questionnaires for evaluating net care and repair behaviors.

Behavior Change Communication (BCC)

Case Study Series on Innovative Net Use Messaging

This series of case studies highlights innovative BCC approaches used to engage target audiences. Each case study describes the context for the intervention and discusses best practices and lessons learned.

  • Making malaria unacceptable: Harmonizing national messages and partner efforts leads to bigger impact in Tanzania
  • Voices and UAM: An Innovative Partnership to Promote Net Use
  • Channeling net use promotion through children as malaria ambassadors – the PataPata Children’s Radio Show

Online Training Series on Evidence-Based Malaria Social & Behavior Change Communication

A six-part lecture series offers fundamental and advanced concepts in evidence-based communication programs for malaria using evidence and data to create strong SBCC programs for malaria. The online course is taught by leaders in the field of SBCC. Learn more about the training models

Toolkit for Care and Repair Research and BCC Interventions

This toolkit contains resources for program planners and NMCPs related to the care and repair of mosquito nets. It includes a number of materials developed to promote net care and repair behaviors in different countries as part of BCC interventions. The toolkit contains both presentations and tools such as workshop agendas and pretesting reports used to develop SBCC materials, as well as examples of SBCC materials. Materials are divided into print, radio, and community mobilization materials.

Country Resources

Toolkit for NetWorks Country Resources

The resources in this toolkit are grouped by country—Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda and Madagascar. Each country developed a strategic approach for their population, optimizing existing and expanding current LLIN distribution channels and designing BCC campaigns to promote the availability and recommended use of nets. Resources include research publications, process evaluations, strategy documents, training materials, BCC campaign material, and evaluation tools and questionnaires.
